Gunwerks Ruck N Shoot Challenge Course

Long Range University Overview

Long Range University exists for the specific purpose of helping you make quick ethical one shot kills in the field. The core of our content is contained in our L1, L2, and L3 classes which utilize a building block approach to provide education and training in every factor which impacts your lethal hit probability. Interwoven throughout all three classes is a training strategy which will improve your ability to function under pressure and significantly extend the range and conditions under which you can take an ethical shot. At Long Range University you will learn to recognize when the conditions are not suitable to ensure a lethal hit.

Experience Overview

Want to test your shooting skills, your physical fitness, and your equipment in the most realistic mountain shooting scenarios available?  Want to score yourself and see how you compare to the database of shooters who have completed this course? The Gunwerks Ruck and Shoot Challenge is the ultimate venue to test and improve skills critical for mountain hunting. There are 15 shooting stations spread out over a marked 3.3-mile course with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Each station will test your ability to find and range an animal target, build a stable shooting position, make a good wind call, shoot on angles and achieve a first-round impact. Target ranges vary from 350 to 800 yards.

For those not so keen on testing their physical fitness we also have a "Ride and Shoot" option. If you choose this option you will hike and carry your equipment short distances between stations, but we will give you a ride between clusters of stations and up the majority of the 1000 feet of elevation gain that separates the lower and upper portions of the course. With this option expect to hike and carry your equipment a total of 1.25 miles with approximately 200 feet of elevation gain.

Not sure if you are capable of the 3.3 mile hike? No problem, if you change your mind partway through, we'll give you a ride.

If you're not feeling competitive and just want to shoot the course for the experience, you can do that too.

Are you self-taught and have never attended Long Range University or any formal training before? Did you assemble your own long-range shooting system? No problem; this challenge is open to anyone. Regardless of your previous training or skill level you will leave with a better understanding of your ability to make an ethical shot in the field because at the end of the day, that is what matters.

Location

Sheep Mountain Range

Cody, Wyoming

Our Sheep Mountain Training facility is located approximately 30 minutes West of Cody in the Absaroka Mountains. Nestled in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains the rugged terrain offers breathtaking views of Buffalo Bill Reservoir and combined with the unpredictable weather patterns in the area, make for a realistic and challenging training environment. This location offers significant mountain wind conditions, steep terrain, practical shooting platforms, and extreme long range target opportunities. We've been training long range hunting for over 15 years and this is one of our favorite field shooting ranges! Sheep Mountain is the ultimate location to prep for your next mountain hunt. If your course requires access to the upper platforms, we use Jeep 4X4 vehicles to transport people and equipment to the ultra-rugged shooting stations. For most of the courses and competitions we hold at this location, we prefer the students to use their equipment as an opportunity to gain confidence while stress testing personal gear. The Jeeps are setup with bed caps and truck vaults to safely store your equipment while traveling. Some courses will be based solely on the lower deck. Students will be allowed to drive their vehicles to the site. We hope you enjoy shooting the Sheep Mountain Range as much as we do!
