Experience Overview
Gunwerks Cow elk hunts are a great way to improve your shooting skills, gain hunting experience and put some meat in the freezer all at the same time. We have partnered with Escondido Hunting in New Mexico. Their range facilities, lodging, and plentiful land owner cow elk tags make this a great event. Our "Hunt Prep" Clinic, which is run on the first day to day and a half of the event, consists of training specifically tailored to the venue, terrain and style of hunting at the event. Topics covered include wind, shooting out to the max distance your shooting system is capable of, and field shooting positions. You will spend the next two and a half to three days hunting with one of Escondido Huntings professional guides and another client. They have a large resident elk population that is not migratory. Suppressors are encouraged but not required to minimize the disruption to the elk herd.
Itinerary
Day 0
- Check in the afternoon / evening before your event
Day 1
- Classroom / Range - Zero Confirmation and trajectory validation
- Lunch
- Range - Wind, Field Shooting Positions, Tripods
- Debrief day
Day 2
- Range Optional - Work on any weak areas then go hunting.
- Hunting for the remainder of the day
Day 3
- Breakfast then full day of hunting
Day 4
- Breakfast then full day of hunting / Depart Ranch

Gear
Required
- Rifle and minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition (Suppressors encouraged)
- New Mexico Hunting license and Cow Elk tag. (You will be emailed instructions on what to purchase after the tags become available on July 1. Although we encourage you to purchase the required tags/license ahead of time their personnel can assist you with this upon your arrival if necessary)
- Sturdy boots
- Weather appropriate hunting atire
Optional but Highly Recommended
- Laser Rangefinder or binoculars with on board Ballistics (We recommend the Revic Acura BLR10 Laser Rangefinding Binoculars)
- Bipod and Rear shooting bag
- Shooting tripod
Provided by Gunwerks for use during the training
- Revic spotting scope and tripod
- Revic Stabilizer tripod for shooting support (This will be available for use during the hunt as well)
- Ear protection
- Shooting mats
Policies
General Policies
- All applicants for our training courses must be US citizens not legally barred from possessing firearms. For non-US citizens, call us directly (307) 296-7300.
- All event attendees must complete our liability and media waiver.
Student Cancellation
Training/Competition:
If you cancel a training registration more than sixty (60) days prior to the earliest event date, your deposit will be refunded in full. If you cancel a training registration less than sixty (60) days but more than thirty (30) days prior to the earliest event date, you can rebook the training or competition for an available alternate date. If you cancel a training registration less than thirty (30) days prior to the earliest event date, all payments toward the class are forfeited and non-refundable.
Gunwerks Class Cancellation:
In rare circumstances, Gunwerks may need to cancel a class. If this occurs, you will be notified as soon as possible and given the option of either a full refund or a move to another course of the same value. Gunwerks reserves the right to change or amend these policies at any time.
Deposit/Final Payment Schedule
- A deposit is required for reservation.
- Balance due 30 days prior to a training or competition event to maintain your reservation - don't worry, we'll remind you when it's time!
