The vast Sonoran Desert in Mexico is home to some of the finest mule deer in the world, and it was here that Aaron Davidson embarked on a memorable hunting trip alongside his son, Derec.
The trip began with preparation and optimism. Aaron and Derec gathered their gear and headed to a shooting range to verify the rifle's zero. Aaron made fine adjustments to the scope, ensuring everything was dialed in perfectly. With the rifle confirmed ready, they set out across the expansive property, spanning thousands of acres, to spot deer through glassing from high vantage points. The landscape promised great weather, abundant sunshine, and stunning sunsets, though the intense heat and rugged terrain tested their perseverance.

Sonora's mule deer are exceptional, boasting impressive antler spreads and genetics that produce trophy-quality bucks. The ranch employs advanced management practices to sustain this quality. During fawning season, extreme summer temperatures pose a threat to young deer, with past losses exceeding 70% in harsh years. To combat this, the operation built an air-conditioned facility where fawns receive round-the-clock care from full-time veterinarians. Newborns are monitored multiple times daily, kept in controlled environments around 80-90 degrees instead of the scorching 110-120 degrees outside. This dedication ensures healthier animals and future giants, with some young bucks already showing promise as potential 200-inch+ trophies.
As they cruised the ranch in modified vehicles, nicknamed "Frankenstein," "the Freak," and "the Hulk" for their monstrous transformations and green Hulk-like color, Aaron and Derec checked trail cameras and scanned for movement. Winds picked up some mornings, slowing activity, but the promise of action kept spirits high. They spotted numerous bucks, from solid 170s and 180s to high 190s and beyond. Coordinating shots amid groups of deer proved challenging; multiple opportunities arose, but identifying the right buck required clear communication to avoid mistakes.

One intense moment involved a cluster of deer, with Aaron and others directing focus on specific animals through windows in the terrain. Distances ranged from 250 to 300 yards, and while a promising shot presented itself, minor issues like a safety being on prevented it. The versatility of the hunt shone through, with guides and hunters constantly on the move, often in shorts to beat the heat.
The climax came when Derec connected on his first Sonoran mule deer. After years of trips to Mexico without success, this marked a milestone. Derec's legs shook with excitement as he made a perfect shot, dropping the buck cleanly. Aaron praised the achievement, calling it a "slobber buck" and celebrating the moment. For Derec, this was his inaugural mule deer harvest, made even more special by sharing it with his father on his fifth collective trip to the region.

The ranch's owner reflected on its transformation. Purchased in 2007 when it had been over-hunted and lacked proper water infrastructure, it now features extensive water lines pumped miles across the property and gravity-fed for distribution. The focus remains on delivering exceptional experiences. Quality accommodations, meals, and the beauty of the land; creating lasting memories through hunting.
Aaron and Derec's Sonora trip exemplified the passion that drives Gunwerks: precision, preparation, and family bonds in pursuit of extraordinary game. Amid the desert's challenges and rewards, they secured not just a trophy, but a shared triumph in one of hunting's premier destinations. The Sonoran mule deer continue to draw discerning hunters, and for the Davidsons, this adventure underscored why the region produces such remarkable animals and unforgettable moments.
