The Rise of the .450 Bushmaster:

Gunwerks Style

Gunwerks has always operated at the intersection of ballistic precision and system integration. We’re known for redefining expectations in long-range hunting with platforms that perform from the first shot to the last. So why build a rifle system around the .450 Bushmaster—a cartridge typically pigeonholed as short-range?

Because hunters in straight-wall states asked us to. And because we knew we could do better.

Why Straight-Wall Matters

In states like Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, and Utah, hunters face season and weapon restrictions requiring straight-wall cartridges for deer and other big game. These regulations aim to improve safety in flatter terrain or near population centers, but they come with a major trade-off: limited effective range. Most factory .450 Bushmaster loads offer ethical shot capability out to 200–250 yards—barely half the distance most Gunwerks shooters consider their comfort zone.

Rather than accept that ceiling, we approached the Bushmaster project like we would any other ballistic challenge—systematically, from the ground up.

Redefining the Cartridge

Factory .450 Bushmaster ammunition typically fires a 250-grain bullet at around 2,200 fps. These bullets have low ballistic coefficients and shed velocity rapidly, resulting in excessive drop, wind drift, and reduced terminal energy at distance.

We developed a 327-grain custom bullet that launches at approximately 2,000 fps, but with far better drag characteristics and significantly more retained energy. While slightly slower at the muzzle, our load delivers much higher performance downrange.

At 500 yards, our load retains 1187 feet per second, nearly 30% more than that of the 250gr factory option that drops off to 950 fps, - well below subsonic. This difference isn’t academic—it directly translates into more ethical bullet performance, a flatter trajectory, and reduced wind drift.

The Gunwerks System Approach

The core of the system is our Magnus platform chambered for .450 Bushmaster and tuned to work seamlessly with our ammunition. This rifle design is built to mitigate recoil and maintain precision, which is critical given the cartridge’s higher impulse.

Every system is delivered zeroed and validated, paired with a Ballistic Data Ring (BDR) or Revic smart optic. This gives the shooter an immediate solution for elevation and wind, with drop compensation already calculated and matched to their specific ammo lot.

The rifle-ammo-optics combination delivers a true 500-yard system, not just a rifle that happens to be legal.

Optimizing Ballistics

Conical bullet profiles were chosen for this application. Unlike traditional ogive shapes more common in bottleneck cartridges, conical designs perform better when launched 1,800–2,000 fps range, where shock transfer and controlled expansion are more reliable. These bullets also exhibit more favorable BC in low-velocity regimes and provide better sectional density, aiding penetration.

We also emphasized internal ballistic consistency, with powder selection and charge tolerances designed to hold extreme spreads well below typical factory standards. At 500 yards, even a 30–40 fps velocity spread can lead to vertical dispersion that exceeds an animal's vital zone, so maintaining tight consistency is key. Our ammo is routinely producing low SD’s and superb accuracy.

Performance in the Field

Range testing showed consistent performance to 550 yards, with full validation under real-world conditions. One of our team members even recorded an impact at 900 yards—not a practical hunting shot, but a strong indication of the platform’s precision envelope.

Where this shines is in those 350–450 yard opportunities that were previously off-limits to straight-wall hunters. We even had this in the field shooting rockchucks - a challenging target in the Wyoming wind. Hits were consistent out to 400 yards and we even tagged one at 460 yards!

Whether you’re hunting over a cut cornfield in Michigan or managing deer on private land in Iowa, this system gives you reach and confidence that factory loads can’t.

Who It's For

This isn’t just a niche project—it’s a solution for serious hunters who are limited by regulation, but not by mindset. If you’re looking to push past the old 200-yard ceiling and demand performance that aligns with your skills, the Gunwerks .450 Bushmaster system is built for that exact purpose.

It’s not a muzzleloader. It’s not a modified AR. It’s a purpose-built, precision rifle platform designed to extract every ounce of performance from a cartridge that most of the industry has ignored.

Conclusion

By reengineering the .450 Bushmaster into a fully integrated system, Gunwerks is opening new opportunities for hunters working within straight-wall restrictions. With improved ballistics, precision manufacturing, and smart integration of optics and ammo, Gunwerks has a new standard for what straight-wall hunting can achieve!
