LR-CARBON

At Gunwerks, we have deliberately avoided any semblance of gimmickry—for us only the results count.  Our Engineers recognized the theoretical benefits to carbon wrapping a thin steel barrel blank, but the word on the street indicated erratic performance.  Testing also uncovered a disturbing fact with carbon fibers and common resin matrices—it does not transmit heat as well as steel, in fact it is an insulator.  In a barrel wrapping configuration, this could give the impression of a barrel that doesn’t heat up, but in reality the steel barrel blank is cooking!  Shooting a barrel at elevated temperature yields premature wear.

The last potential problem we identified with carbon wrapping was inducing stress in the barrel steel by turning to the small diameters required for wrapping.  This can cause Point of Impact shift when the barrel heats, and the heavy machining also changes bore dimensions and consequent accuracy.

Our Process:  We start with a stress relieved barrel blank that has been drilled and rifled.  The barrel blank is turned to final contour, followed by a heat stress relief in a high temperature furnace.  Next, the final lapping process finishes the bore dimension to specification and ensures precise bore and groove dimensions.  The duplex carbon fibers are combined with a highly heat transmissive resin matrix and wrapped around the barrel.  These barrel “blanks” are fit to our custom Gunwerks action (Stainless Steel or Titanium) using state of the art CNC equipment to maintain fit and finish specifications.

This barreled action is combined with a lightweight version of our LR hunting stock.  The vertical style grip, negative comb, slight cast off and toe out all add up to a lightweight rifle the shoots and handles like the finest custom stocked rifles available.  The best part of the ergonomic design is reduced felt recoil, and faster target acquisition after the shot.

What this means to our customers is a Carbon barreled rifle that shoots!  First shot, five fast shots later, and after 500 shots down the barrel.  Finally.
