Trade Show Schedule

We are gearing up for a busy trade show schedule and trying to catch up on production so we have some rifles to take along. There will be some great seminars, and some sneak peaks at new footage for 2010! Please check out the schedule by clicking here. Also, to celebrate a great year and get in the Christmas spirit, any rifles ordered by the end of December will receive 100 rounds at no cost! That is a $300-$400 value. Make sure you take the time to read the notes below about temperature stability and the new 6XC cartridge from David Tubb.

Huskemaw Scope Features and Installation

Inline

The end of the year always brings increased interest in the Huskemaw 5-20 long range rifle scope. Click on the picture to see the new video clip that highlights all the 5-20 features. We hear lots of stories about a missed shot, or the big one that was just out of range. Gunwerks offers complete long range systems, but many people don't realize that we can mount a Huskemaw on their existing rifle. Hundreds of customers send in rifles every year, we provide the rings, mount the scope, shoot the long range data, and build the custom turrets. We do the work. Call us if you have any questions at 1.877.486.9375.

Temperature Stable

We just made it through a week of -20 degree weather! It's a good thing our 1000 yard range has an indoor shooting bench. When the temperature drops, long range shooters need to pay close attention to the temperature sensitivity of their powder. Let me explain. For many powders, the burn rate and energy potential for a powder charge is effected by the powder temperature. This means that as the temperature changes the muzzle velocity can also change. Military snipers are trained to compensate for the low grade powders used in mass produced military ammunition, but most of us don't have the time. Its easy to measure, just shoot a group of shells at a low temp and let the barrel cool, and shoot a group of shells at a high temperature, then compare the average velocity. You may be surprised at how much variation there is! A 50 fps spread could cause POI errors at 1000 yards that could be measured in feet! The solution is to use an extreme powder from Hodgdon or VitaVouri. All Gunwerks ammo is handloaded using these premium powders. We just tested the 7mm again today:

The New 6XC Cartridge

Inline

It took while to get rifles going in this cartridge, but it was worth the wait! I first talked with David Tubb about his "across the course" round about this time last year. He developed the cartridge for long range shooting at targets in difficult situations, with low recoil for quick followup shots without breaking shooting position. Anyways, for us, we're looking for a hot little 6mm cartridge for dual use on varmint and medium sized big game. If you seat a regular 115 grain VLD in a 243 case to fit in the magazine your bullet is seated so deep that you take up significant case capacity, limiting your maximum velocities attainable. With the 6XC, the case is shorter. With a 115 VLD seated so the bottom of the bearing surface is right at the base of the neck, all the powder space is utilized and it fits in a standard magazine. It is a very efficient case that feeds well and with the 115 Berger VLD, it has very powerful dual use potential. The 115 VLD has a muzzle velocity of 3050 with our Gunwerks ammunition and it maintains the 2000 fps out to 800 yards at 5000. We can do a bolt action "predator" model right now, and look for a Gunwerks AR platform in 2010.
